A massive data breach at Episolon compromised the names and email addresses of customers of many major U.S. companies. If you do business with Best Buy, Wallgreens, TiVo, Chase, Target or a host of other companies, you have probably been impacted. We expect to see very targeted "spear phishing" attacks come out of this data breach in the near future. We'll talk about the seriousness of the breach, what precautions you need to take now that this data is out and how you can keep yourself safe from these types of breaches in the future.

Katie gives us a preview of her session at Macworld 2011.
This session will talk about the techniques for using your Mac to move your way into more paperless life. Topics will include techniques for collecting years worth of paper data and inputting it into the computer, archiving and organization methods, workflows for handling all the paper that comes into your life, and using technology for generating less paper to begin with. We’ll discuss the various scanners and methods for inputting data, the software available for catalog and indexing the data and archive and storage. Once all the data is digitized we’ll also talk about making sure the data is secure, accessible and backed up.

Heads Up! MacPeople Moves to Tuesday in February and April

A distance education class will be meeting in Entomology Room 1031 on Thursday evenings during the spring semester. Therefore we must switch the meeting day to the second Tuesday of the month during February and April when we are excluded from using room 1031 on Thursday evening. (Note that we are able to maintain our regular Thursday meeting in March because it is UF’s Spring Break)

Here are the second Tuesday dates for the beginning of next year:

It's been a year since we launched the FileMaker Special Interest Group. Our plan was to spend that time exploring the basics and to touch on a few advanced topics. I think we've accomplished what we set out to do and would like to thank everyone who has participated and contributed to the success of the group.

The FileMaker SIG has been sponsored by the Gainesville Macintosh Users Group. I would encourage everyone to attend their regular meetings on the 2nd Thursday of every month for ongoing presentations on database and other computer topics.

Inaugural FileMaker Pro Special Interest Group Meeting
